Old Shoe Caddy Re-Purposed as Vertical Growing Platform

This idea comes from the folks over at East of Eden Farms have put an old canvas shoe caddy to good use as a planter for growing strawberries or other small plants and vegetables in a small space by filling the shoe slots with potting soil and hanging the entire unit on a wooden fence in the best tradition of an old-time farmer making use of the materials at hand. Take a look at the video below to see how it was done.

I don’t know how long the canvas caddy will last in the Georgia sun and rain, but I suspect it will be good for a least one season’s harvest. If you are squeamish about growing your vegetables in slots that once contained shoes, give the caddy a good washing, or reserve it for growing flowers or other decorative plants.
